Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

Troubled by Enfield's story, Utterson rereads the will that leaves Jekyll's estate to Hyde. After watching Hyde's doorway, Utterson confronts him and is disturbed by his indefinably repellent appearance. Learning that Hyde has free access to Jekyll's house, Utterson suspects that Hyde is blackmailing his friend.

Jekyll refuses Utterson's request to alter the will and insists that he can be rid of Hyde whenever he chooses. Jekyll makes Utterson promise to safeguard Hyde's interests if Jekyll disappears.

A maid witnesses Hyde brutally beat Sir Danvers Carew to death with a heavy cane. A letter found on the victim leads the police to Utterson, who identifies Carew and recognises the broken cane as Jekyll's gift. Utterson leads Inspector Newcomen to Hyde's Soho lodgings, where they find the other half of the cane and signs of a hurried escape.

Jekyll assures Utterson that he has finished with Hyde and presents a letter supposedly promising Hyde's escape. Mr Guest observes that Hyde's handwriting closely resembles Jekyll's, though the letters are differently sloped. Utterson concludes that Jekyll forged the letter to protect Hyde.

After briefly resuming his social life, Jekyll abruptly isolates himself and refuses to see Utterson. Utterson finds Lanyon gravely altered, estranged from Jekyll and certain that he will soon die. After Lanyon's death, Utterson receives a sealed narrative that must remain unopened until Jekyll's death or disappearance.

Utterson and Enfield find Jekyll sitting at his window and invite him to join their walk. Jekyll's face suddenly changes in terror, and he slams the window before Utterson and Enfield depart in horrified silence.

Convinced that something terrible has happened to Jekyll, Poole brings Utterson to the doctor's house. After hearing a strange voice and reviewing the cabinet occupant's suspicious behaviour, Poole and Utterson smash down the door. They discover Hyde's body in Jekyll's clothes, find Jekyll missing and recover documents directing Utterson to read Lanyon's narrative and Jekyll's confession.

Following Jekyll's urgent instructions, Lanyon obtains a drawer of chemicals and papers from the cabinet. Hyde arrives at midnight, eagerly inspects the drawer and prepares a potion from its contents. Lanyon watches Hyde drink the potion and physically transform into Dr Jekyll.

Jekyll explains how he devised a potion that transformed him into Hyde, allowing his concealed desires to act freely. After an involuntary transformation and a period of restraint, Hyde erupts in violence and kills Carew, driving Jekyll to renounce him again. Increasingly frequent transformations and a failed supply of the potion's original salt leave Jekyll expecting Hyde to take permanent control.
